How many points win a volleyball set? 25 points, 15 points and a two-point lead
Check when a volleyball set ends with examples at 25–24, 26–24 and 15–14, and distinguish a set score from the match result.

In standard indoor six-player volleyball, a regular set requires at least 25 points and a two-point lead. The fifth, deciding set has a 15-point target and the same winning margin. Reaching the target alone does not end the set. Check the event regulations when a school or recreational competition uses a different format.

A 25–23 result satisfies both conditions. At 25–24 the lead is only one, so play continues. If the trailing team makes it 25–25, the teams keep playing until a two-point gap appears.
| Regular-set score | End the set? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 24–22 | No | Target not reached |
| 25–23 | Yes | Target and two-point lead |
| 25–24 | No | Only a one-point lead |
| 26–24 | Yes | Both conditions met |
| 30–29 | No | No fixed ceiling in standard volleyball |
| 32–30 | Yes | A two-point lead in extended play |
The deciding set uses 15 points
A standard best-of-five match tied at two sets each goes to a fifth set. At 15–14, play continues; 16–14 wins. A tied 14–14 score therefore needs an extension. The regular-set target must not be applied to this deciding set.
| Deciding-set score | Result |
|---|---|
| 14–12 | Continue: below target |
| 15–13 | Set won |
| 15–14 | Continue: one-point lead |
| 16–14 | Set won |
One set is different from the match
A 25–20 score describes one set; 1–0 records sets already won. Standard best-of-five matches end when a team wins three sets. Recreational best-of-three or single-set events should use their agreed format.
- Agree the regular and deciding targets, winning margin and match format.
- Record one point after each confirmed rally.
- Check both winning conditions near the end.
- Save the set result before starting the next set at zero.
Frequently asked questions
Does 25–24 win?
No. The lead is only one point; 26–24 can end a regular set.
Does 30–29 end a set?
Standard indoor volleyball has no fixed points ceiling, so play continues.
Does air volleyball use the same target?
Do not assume so. Check that event’s format separately.
