When checking current pickleball serving rules, identify the rulebook adopted by your event. This guide was checked against USA Pickleball official resources in October 2026. The sequence below describes traditional side-out doubles; professional events and rally-scoring formats may use different requirements.
Open pickleball scoreboardVolley and drop serves differ
| Serve | Contact | Main check |
|---|---|---|
| Volley serve | Before a bounce | Upward arm motion, contact not above waist, paddle head not above highest wrist point |
| Drop serve | After a bounce | The summary permits it without those three contact-motion conditions; check full release requirements in the rulebook |
At contact, at least one foot must be grounded behind the baseline. Do not step into the court or outside the extended sideline and centreline boundaries. Serve diagonally into the correct court, beyond the non-volley zone and its line. Normally only one service attempt is allowed.
Singles service court
In traditional singles, serve from the right with an even server score and left with an odd score. Announce the server’s score before the receiver’s.
Traditional doubles order
- After a side-out, start the new service sequence from the right court.
- On a point, the same server changes sides and continues.
- After the first server loses the serve, the partner serves from the correct position.
- After the second server loses it, service passes to the opponents.
The first service sequence of a game is the exception: only one partner serves. The initial 0–0–2 call identifies that opening server opportunity; the third number is not points or games.
The two-bounce requirement
Let the serve bounce before returning it. The serving team must also let the return bounce before hitting it. Only after those two required bounces may players volley in accordance with the rules.
A practical scorekeeper check
Write down the adopted rulebook, scoring method and first server. Before each serve, reconcile score call, server and court. After a rally, confirm its result before recording points or a service change. Pause input during a dispute and use the event’s rules to resolve it.
Set up your match
Use the event format; officials still judge serve legality.
Open pickleball scoreboardFrequently asked questions
Does 0–0–2 mean two points?
No. The third number identifies the opening service opportunity in traditional doubles.
Is a serve on the non-volley-zone line good?
No. That serve is short and a fault.
Does rally scoring use the same doubles sequence?
Do not assume it does. Check the event’s adopted rally-scoring rules.
